Many people with drug addiction problems desperately want to stop using and to live normal lives, but they don’t know how. They need help, but they don’t know where to get it, or they have trouble making that first step. And then they do something to draw the attention of the police and they are arrested with drugs.
I can help them. By getting the judge to put them into a treatment program rather than locking them away for years, these individuals can be rehabilitated and can rejoin society. But drug treatment isn’t automatic; it takes a dedicated and experienced drug defense lawyer such as myself to make it happen. Because the easy way is just to send the drug user to jail or prison. The prosecutor or the district attorney are happy to get a quick and easy conviction, and they think they’ve done their jobs.
But being locked up doesn’t help the drug user, nor does it help society, because the person will still have an ongoing drug problem when they leave prison or jail. While imprisoned, they cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars a year, and then when they leave prison or jail, the whole cycle starts again. That’s crazy; it hasn’t worked, and it isn’t working now.
Incarceration for Drug Charges Isn't the Answer
By addressing individual’s drug use, the real root of the problem, I’m able to get my clients into drug treatment programs instead of prison, and I’ve done it time and time again. After I show the judge or the jury that my client isn’t just a drug user, but someone with family and friends, who is loved, who has had a positive effect on people around them, then they start to see the real person. A real person with a problem, who needs help.
When the judge or the jury reach that point, they are much more likely to recommend treatment rather than incarceration, and then that individual can receive the help he or she needs. That’s the approach that I bring to these cases, and I’ve been very successful with it. My clients get help, and they are able to get their lives back on track.
